Grace's Story - Continued....
February 3, 2009
Grace is doing so good everyone. She will be trimmed this weekend, but she sure doesnt act like she needs it. I have watched this little pony evolve into something that is so amazing to be apart of. In the last several weeks, I have seen her canter!! She will break into canter for several strides, and I truly did not expect to see that so early on. She is even doing roll backs! lol. So if that doesnt tell you anything about how she feels. She hasnt even been on any sort of pain reliever in months either. So cool...we are so pleased.
Elmo on the other hand....lol, is a holy terror! As I sit typing I am watching him terrorize Cisco into playing with him on this snowy February day. I have them out in the round pen today so the two of them can get their play out. They continually chase each other, nip each others heels and butts...lol. Cisco is really good with him too, seems he knows Elmo is smaller than him, but Elmo thinks he is much bigger of course. They have been a joy to take care of these last few months.
As soon as Steve trims them, I'll post the pictures asap. Happy February, and Happy Valentines Day!

The 6th trim happened last night. I dont have pictures yet, but will. I will say that we are very pleased with what we saw last night. She has concavity!! In both front hooves!! We also measured at least an inch of growth since she has been here. She did very well, seemed to stand better. But I will say I think she is sore today. Ive seen her lie down most of the day. I also dont think she feels real well either, but she isnt off her food so thats a good thing. But her manure tells me she may not be up to par?? So we will keep an eye on her. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers, Id hate to have this little girl have a setback when she is doing so good. Elmo is....well, Elmo just is...lol.

Elmo was gelded today. He took it really well, and is doing good. Keep him in your prayers that he heals fast. Bless the little guy :)

I spoke to soon. Last night when I went out to check on Elmo, he was shivering after his surgery. I called the vet and find out that he had to give him almost double the dose of sedation because he couldnt find a vein. Soo....he was absorbing through his muscles and that was what caused him to shiver. He was sweating a bit too, and it was recommended that I find a blanket to put on him. Well, having always had large breed horses, I didnt have a blanket to fit a 300lb pony. So I got creative! After walking around the house trying to figure out which blanket to sacrifice, (as we dont have many old ones) I chose a plush red velvety throw blanket that was quilted. Grabbed a clothespin and out I went. He willingly let me put it on him, I think he thought it was a good idea too...lol. I also decided that grass string probably wouldnt have been a good idea to use, so I found a soft dog leash and used it to tie the blanket in place around his belly. I wish I had had my camera, cause he sure looked cute. It fit pretty good, and stayed in place. He is doing much better now, and is in a lot with DaVinci, both have had a little bute to take the edge off....Ill go out later and get them moving around...

Its been an exciting few days around here with Grace. She received her 7th trim a few days ago and it moving around so good. She had a lot of growth, so her heels were taken down quite a bit this time to allow for that coffin bone to continue to go back in place. Funny thing about Grace is she starts to get a little pissy about getting trimmed half way through, and starts this rearing thing...not too aggrivating as she is small...but kind of humorous to watch Steve try to trim while she is doing it.
The day she was trimmed, she felt so good that she was running around her paddock like a mad woman. Cantering around, doing roll backs, even bucking! So, we decided it was time to see how she would take being in with the big girls. It was great! She ran around with them, played and kicked! They have been used to being around her as they share a fence row and are next door in stalls sometimes too. So she is no stranger. They were very curious of her, dont get me wrong, but they took care of her. Shade in particular, ( our Anglo-Arab) was very interested in her. She almost seemed to become her protector...When the other horses would come around to investigate, she would run inbetween them to keep them away from her. After they all settled down, Grace found a tree just her size and had a big scratch fest! Her face, her neck, her back, butt, you name it! She was quite enjoying herself. So I have pictures, please enjoy!

"Finally!! A tree I can scratch my face on...and my neck.....and my most importantly my butt!!"
Shade became very interested in Grace, and ultimately became her friend as she ran to protect Grace from Satin, and then watched over her for the entire day...
Da Vinci and Elmo feeling better a few days after their joint gelding... :)

Sorry its been so long since Ive updated Grace's progress. Whew! We have been busy. Grace was trimmed yesterday for the 9th time? Her hooves look almost normal now. She was sore again, as every trim usually makes her sore the first few days. But today, she is moving around great, and appears to be comfortable. She still trots around, and occasionally canters. Currently she is in a pasture with my gelding Yizzy and a new/old mare, "Fancy Lena", Steve and I cant decide on her name...lol. They take care of her and are good to her. Im hoping to give her a good and long awaited bath, as I know she deserves it. And needs it! Soon after I will post pictures.
Elmo is doing good, still a stinker. Still using Da Vinci as his personal umbrella when it rains...and his personal fly swat on the hot days. Ahhh...some things never change. :)

Grace and Elmo are together again! Someone needs to remind Elmo though, that he is no longer a little stallion. And...that Grace is his mom...well, boys will be boys. They do seem to enjoy each others company. We are in the process of moving horses to our new place and also building the ponies their own pen. Although if Elmo continues his shenanigans, we may have to put him in with some of the other geldings again so he can get his "play" out. I dont think Grace cares to much for playing and romping with him. Cant blame her...he's a butthead..lol.
